Of pens and procrastination

This weekend, while I was supposed to be grading essays, I decided on a whim that my favorite pens needed to be in a separate container from the rest of the "common" pens. I mean, when I want to use one of my special pens, I can't waste precious time digging through the giant flower pot on the kitchen counter to find my perfectly smooth and liquidy (yet quick drying!) Pentel EnerGel pens. Now instead of a giant flower pot, my special pens are hanging out in a dainty little mason jar, easy to spot and grab at a moment's notice.

Because that needed to be done rightthisveryminute, don't you know? Those essays have been waiting all week. They can wait another 5 minutes.

Do you have favorite pens? What are they? I want to know so I can try them out. Because even though I am fiercely loyal to my EnerGels, I am willing to entertain other options.

What are some of your infamous procrastination techniques? Besides unnecessarily organizing pens, I also like to:
  • play the piano
  • clean out the refrigerator
  • clean off my desk
  • go to the library because I JUST realized I had a bunch of books on hold that I need to pick up rightthisveryminute
  • go grocery shopping to replace all the food I threw away when I was cleaning out the refrigerator

  1. Pens... I used to love using a green, felt tipped pen to make it easier to read my comments but not make kids feel the dread with red.
As for procrastination- a great movie on a Sunday was my guilty passion.
Great questions to think about :)
Honestly, I don't miss grading on a Sunday.

  2. Oh dear. I could add to this list endlessly. Reorganizing books is high up there! Dusting, Reorganizing shelves in my closet. Cleaning under the bathroom sink. Kitchen drawers. Spice drawer adventures.

  3. Absolutely I have favorite pens. And I have different favorites on different days. I keep them in my school desk, my school bag and the end table drawer by my chair. I love Flair pens when I want color (I have a pumpkin/brown color that I love). Uniball SIgno black pens when I feel "professional" and Bic purple for grading and for fun in my writer's notebook. (I think I have a problem).

  4. Pens?!?! You are speaking my language!! My new favorites are Stabilo Point Visco (Wallet Of 10). They are smooth and I LOVE them!!! Procrastination? Laundry. Cleaning. Organizing my desk. Painting. Walking my dog...the list is endless. Thank you for a great post!

  5. Loved this post! I even have specific pens that go with specific notebooks. And I'm hopelessly disorganized, which means rooting through my horror of a purse for 10 minutes before I can write ANYTHING because inevitably, I pull up the blue pen when I need the black pen and vice versa. Glad I'm not the only one with a mild pen obsession! Think I'm going to try your trick of having a jar just for my special writing pens.

  6. Report cards were just due and nothing brings on procrastination in quite the same manner. The bookcase next to my desk got organized. Spring vacation was planned. Extra quality time with my daughter...

And on the pen idea - I laughed, at first. I then realized that my 'special pens' live in their own pencil case just inside my second desk drawer. They aren't even out, so no one else can get to them, but are easily accessible for me.

  8. Those are my favorite pens, too, especially with purple ink. My last purple one just died, though, so now I am on to pink. I really need to get some more.

I was just going to start working on something when I realized I needed to read your blog rightthisveryminute. And now I feel like you were speaking directly to me. You are my procrastination today.
